Basic training is provided at a CAA approved training establishment. LBIA currently sends its recruits on residential courses either at Teeside Airport's International Fire Training School, or at BAA Gatwick. The courses are six and eight weeks in duration, respectively.
Recruits undergo an intensive but focused period of training covering all aspects of aviation fire fighting. This covers both theoretical and practical training, which includes subjects ranging from aircraft construction to wearing breathing apparatus. Upon completion of the course, a certificate of competence is issued.
All personnel are required to revalidate their certificate of competence every four years, by attending a one week residential course. This cycle of revalidation continues throughout the duration of a firefighter's career.
In addition to maintaining their certificate of competence, personnel are required to pass a CAA recognised medical at specified intervals. To enable crews to maintain their levels of fitness, a fully equipped gymnasium is provided on station.
A comprehensive training schedule is maintained on station. This covers all areas of aviation fire fighting. LBIA use a purpose built training rig that allows crews to take part in realistic hot fire exercises. Crews also carry out familiarisation exercises using aircraft that regularly operate from the airport.
